The Mango Tree

PROJECT | SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES

Reducing dependency on overseas aid
Providing a bespoke package of fundraising, communications, management and organisational development support to The Mango Tree, an international education NGO working in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Malawi, the Sustainable Communities project aims to facilitate a three-year (2022- 2025) handover to their Africa partners in order to ensure long-term sustainability.

How?
This is being delivered through localisation of action – a partnership approach with local project leadership, new networks for direct funding, the development of locally-led social enterprises and entrepreneurial development models that build self-reliance and reduce dependency on overseas aid.

Why?
The international NGO world is changing. Global emergencies are taking centre stage and the need to address poverty issues in the UK is increasing. This change is happening in parallel with the call to examine our historic role in overseas aid and the importance of transferring organisational responsibility along with providing the necessary support to build self-reliance.

Since 2011 Emily has worked to support our education and rural livelihoods work in Kenya and Malawi, raising over £4million to fund our projects. Now, as part of The Wilder Network, Emily and her team are supporting us through a three-year process of localisation, that includes a transitional package of training, business development and mentoring, so we will be self-sufficient and less dependent on the global North for our funding.
